We have had two new HD TVs for just a bit over 5 months. One is a 23" Sony and one a 32" LG. The Sony hooked up easily, but the LG was like our first color set. We diddled with picture, sound, aspect ratio, and other settings to get the best picture and sound on each channel. I still don't know if the differences between channels is resolution, settings, or in the case of the news, makeup. But we were just happy to get it so that we could see all the face lifts...
Now for the Haier, a relatively unknown Chinese brand of high definition TV. I plugged it into our Comcast cable box using an HDMI cable, and bingo, a bright and sharp picture with wonderful sound. For a few minutes I was sure a mistake was made, and we had been given a 1080p instead of the 720 that was on the box. Perhaps anything under 50 inches doesn't matter. We think that the Haier is just as good and maybe even a little better picture than the LG! Not one factory setting had to be changed!
The sound from the built-in speakers is excellent - in part due to using an HTMI cable - and the Sound Leveler really works. No more spikes when changing channels and it even works on commercials that used to blare 10 db higher than the program.
(The hookups and quality are very good with our DVD player and photographs on a flash drive, but they will not be used very much. The TV will not be used with our computer, so I can't address that either. Some will complain about the inputs being placed under a lip in the back, but most HD TVs use the same configuration because so many people will wall mount the TV. If the plugs were straight in, the TV would not be flush with the wall.)
Initially, we had so much trouble with the remote from Comcast, that I was about to give this only 4 stars. We can only get HD through the Comcast box, and the Comcast remote - as bad as it is - should be our only remote. But the Comcast remote would not accept the two codes for the Haier TV, and I thought we would have to use two remotes. I called Comcast, and they gave me the same two numbers that came with their box. I called Haier, and they told me that they DIDN'T HAVE CODES FOR Comcast.
All was not lost, however. I went on line, asked for "Comcast remote codes for Haier," and the second link was a discussion where one respondent said, "Try the codes for DURABRAND."
The third code under Durabrand (10178), and we were set!
(And, since I've now been asked this question 4 times by people who are concerned about whether it will fit into their cabinets, the set is 31.25 inches wide, i.e., side-to-side! The 37.8 inches they refer to is diagonally!)
I said in the title of this review that it was unexpectedly fantastic. Well, this is a phenomenal TV especially considering that it was the least expensive of all 32 inch HD sets. We now have great Hi Def in our bedroom where, in six minutes, I'm going to watch the last game of the World Series! (Sure, I could watch it in the living room, but I like new experiences.)

UPDATE Dec-2011:
The best part about this TV was its under $200 price. But now that it's back to its regular price, there might be better options such as the LG 32LK330, the Panasonic TC-L32C3, or the Samsung LN32D403. Or you can upgrade to the bigger TCL 40" TV which I also reviewed. For a little bit more money, you get a 57% increase in viewing area, a Samsung 1080p panel, an increase in sound quality, and a 2 year warranty.

I purchased this TV on sale in Nov. 2011 for $197. It's an updated model of Haier L32B1120. I'll rate each category in Amazon's system of 1 to 5 stars. My ratings are relative to how this TV stacks up against other TVs in its price range.
SETUP (3 stars)
For wall mounting, you need a VESA 400x200mm compliant mount such as this, this, or this. I used the plastic stand. The 2 shorter screws go into the top holes which wasn't stated in the manual. If you're trying to fit it into a shelf, the dimensions with stand are 31.25" x 22" x 8.5". The power cord doesn't have a power brick attached which is a plus. I don't have a problem with the connections being on the bottom of the TV since I'll only be connecting them one time. I consider the headphone connection on the rear bottom to be a design flaw. (If you do want to use headphones, getting something like this should solve the problem.) I'm using a learning universal remote which did find codes for this TV.
PICTURE (5 stars)
I changed the preset picture setting to 'Theater'. I also changed the 'Backlight' to 9. There are some slight flickering when it's set to 8 or lower. I watched some blu-ray movies from an Amazon recommended distance of about 6 feet and didn't notice any obvious picture defects. The viewing angle is very good for an LCD. The black level is average, but the brightness is good. The screen is glossy, so do watch out for glare. BTW, you won't notice a difference between a 720p and a 1080p 32" TV when viewed at a normal viewing distance.
GAMING (5 stars)
I hooked up my Xbox 360, tried a couple games, and didn't notice any input lag.
AUDIO (1 star, 3 stars if it wasn't broken)
The audio sounds about right for 7 watt LCD TV speakers, which isn't great but passable for a bedroom. You can hook up speakers to it via coaxial digital audio out or headphone out. The TV speakers don't automatically turn off when you plug into the headphone out though. (You need to press the mute button. If you adjust the volume or turn the TV off and on, you need to press mute again, which might be annoying to some.) Here's my only problem with this TV: When the sound is coming through the HDMI, it's fine. But when I hooked up the sound via the 2 sets of RCA inputs or the PC audio in, I get static noises. It sounds like a slightly out of range radio station; one moment sound seems fine, but another moment the static cuts in, especially noticeable during quiet segments.
RELIABILITY ? (Unrated)
This is the first popular TV from this brand, so I'll need a couple more months before determining how reliable it is. I suggest getting the SquareTrade extended warranty for some peace of mind.
PRICE (5 stars)
Free shipping, free 30 day return, delivered to your door in 2 days for $197 is hard to beat.
I would have rated this TV a 5 star if it wasn't for the broken audio. Instead of exchanging it, I returned it after finding a good deal on a bigger TV.
