Customer Reviews

These are decent speakers, but not great. If you just wanted a speaker upgrade for your PC or Mac, this might fill the bill, but don't expect super hi-fi sound.
Pros:
1. Easy set up.
2. Front panel controls
3. The power brick is not so huge that it crowds your power strip.
4. Front panel plug for mp3 that cuts around primary sound source.
5. Non-distorted, clear sound. Good for jazz, classical, most pop.
Cons:
1. None of the parts detach from each other, so you can only place the speakers the distance of the existing cord, which is about 3'.
2. The nice design takes up a bit more desk space than I like, and there is no wall mount hole on the back.
3. There is only a "tone control" not a separate bass and treble. SO you only get one, or the other.
4. Bass is too weak for rock or R;B, etc.
Conclusion:
When you take the $27.39 price into account (current Amazon price) these are really good value speakers. They sound good, set up easily and don't look as cheap as other speakers in the category. However, if you expect these to blow away some Bose PC speakers, you will be disappointed. Your wallet, however, will be happier. You can also get part way there by upgrading to the Altec BXR 1221 three piece set for $29.95. For the extra $2, you get bass and a "little" freer speaker placement.

The Altec Lansing VS2620 2.0 Speaker System is a very good mix of features and affordability. This set will not blow you away if you are demanding about sound quality, but it has more than sufficient sound quality for the home user. AL also priced this set right, with the list price being not too far off from a fair amount considering what you get. The angular styling makes these attractive, and the auxiliary input jack is a nice extra in budget speakers. This is the same jack that will allow you to connect an iPod or another MP3 player, or a second audio source such as another computer, using a standard line-in cable. This is becoming a standard requirement but it's a great extra in a set of speakers in this price range.
The looks of these speakers are nice. The body of the speakers are black, though there is chrome trim and light orange accents on the speaker fabric. The angular design makes these somewhat inefficient space-wise, because the base is wide enough that these will take up more real estate on your desk than most comparable speakers. Still, that's a minor negative considering the over-all good looks of these speakers.
In the sound department, these are average. They did respond to breaking in, and over extended use the sound quality has improved considerably. They also come in a version that includes a subwoofer for $5 to $10 more, and both this set and the 2.1 version are worthy options depending on your needs and space constraints.
One of the negatives is that the cables that connect the main speaker to the other channel are hard-wired. It would have been nice to have jacks and male to male cables to connect the speakers, but in this price range that's not something other sets generally provide. The tone dial is also somewhat of a gimmick. For most people, leaving it set to the center setting will be the best option. Some people do like to be able to make minor adjustments so this is a matter of judgement.
CONCLUSION
Among the many 2.0 speakers that I have tried, these are one of the best values. Considering the price, the negatives with this set pale in comparison. Give them a try.
