Bottom-Line: All-n-all, I am marginally pleased with the "Apple Smart Cover for iPad 2".
I understand the cache of the Apple name and engineering prowess. The moniker has come to stand for simplicity and ease of use as well excellence and for that we all pay a premium. But it is simply unforgivable of Apple not ship a case with its very expensive iPad 1 or iPad 2, thereby forcing the newly besotted public to go casting about for fashionable yet functional clothing for our new mobile electronic tablets.
Like most Apple products there is an accessory line for the iPad 2 and this includes a very simple but cool Snap-On cover in a plethora of colors, including black, pink, gray, cream, navy, blue, and orange. The cover of your choice can be yours for a mere $39.00. At first glance the Polyurethane (or aniline-dyed Italian leather) Apple Smart Cover for iPad 2 looks woefully inadequate from a functional standpoint but, it looks good going snapping into place with built-in magnets that draw the Smart Cover to the iPad for a perfect fit that not only protects the iPad's screen, but also wakes up, stands up, and brings a splash of color to your tablet.
The "Apple Smart Cover for iPad 2" is thin, flexible, sleek, and extremely light weight. The Smart Cover protects the screen, but leaves the units button and other controls, including headphone jack, dock connector port, on/off switch and volume control buttons free and easy to access.
Even better, the Apple Smart Cover doubles as the perfect movie-watching, game-playing, web-surfing, do-it-all companion because it folds in all the right places so you can quickly create a stand that holds iPad upright. And it also lets you tilt iPad into a comfortable (horizontal) typing position. If you prefer to hold iPad, the Smart Cover flips back and out of the way like a page in a magazine. The interior of the case is made of soft microfiber material that will not scratch the surface of the iPad. And as I stated the case can be folded horizontally or vertically to hold iPad at an angle for viewing video or typing on the onscreen keyboard. And when in the horizontal position the iPad can be angled so 15 degrees making typing on the on-screen keyboard rather simple. And again the folded up case is held to the iPad via magnets.
The Apple Smart Cover for iPad 2 makes iPad do things no other cover can possible do. Close it and iPad automatically goes to sleep saving precious battery power. Open it--even the first flap--and the iPad 2 instantly wakes up from its nap; there is no need to depress the power button. The Smart Cover doesn't just protect iPad 2, it keeps it ready to go whenever you are.
Because there is no size difference between the different models of iPad, the Apple Smart Cover for iPad 2 will fit the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB tablets. All-n-all, I am very pleased with the Apple Smart Cover for iPad 2; it does a masterful job protecting the screen of the iPad 2 while bring style and utility to the unit. It is still unforgivable that Apple does not offer an in-the-box case--or cleaning cloth for the screen for that matter--for the iPad, but at least the Apple Smart Cover for iPad 2 is a huge step in the right direction.

Cover has two key problems: It provides no protection for the back of the device, leaving it vulnerable to dents, scratches and drops. Also, the "microfiber" material underneath the cover, which supposedly protects the screen, picks up dirt and dust like a magnet when you fold the cover back to use it as a stand.
