These notebook locks have been around forever, and I've used several different versions of notebook locks (i.e. combination locks and keyed locks). Some have been Kensington branded, some not...
I've always had 2 minor issues with notebook locks in general:
1. They're a hassle to put on ; off
2. The lock doesn't alway fit tightly in the notebook (due to variations of the notebook lock 'slot' on different notebooks)
It looks like Kensington has solved my issues!
This new ClickSafe lock comes with a security anchor (their term) that you install in the 'slot' of your notebook. They provide the tools (all that's needed is a small allen wrench), and it literally takes a minute or less. Once installed, this little anchor looks like a nub on your notebook. It's unobtrusive and doesn't cause any issues putting my notebook in or out of my carrying case.
All that's needed to attach the lock to the notebook is pushing the lockhead onto the nub. Then your hear a "CLick!" and it's secured. (yes, I actually heard "Click!" with an exclamation point).
In short, there is no need to use a key or twist a combination to lock your notebook...you only need to use the key to UNLOCK the notebook (a concept so simple I wonder why it took them so long to come up with this). Of course, with any lock of this nature you still need to wrap the steel cable around something secure (it's like a bike lock, folks...very simple).
Also, the fit of the lock to your notebook is snug and secure...because the security anchor (aka 'nub') is affixed tightly to your laptop through the existing slot, and because the lock is designed to fit tightly onto the anchor, the fit is consistent every time. Plus, it just feels good and secure.
I'm not sure if all this is making sense...maybe I'll post a video review too.
If you're looking for a notebook lock (and you clearly are since you're on this product page and reading this review), there probably is not a better lock available. I highly recommend this lock.
Great lock and works similar to others sold by Kensington. The difference is the permanent "stub" you screw in for the "snap on" lock. It sticks out about half a CM which isn't a big deal to most people but if you have a tight fit laptop bag or case it might cause a problem. Snap on lock saves time and I don't have to get my key out every time I want to lock it up. Of course you do need the key to unlock it so if you're going to the library don't forget the key.
