Customer Reviews

After trying these speakers on my PC, Logitech Z323, Bose Companion II, and Klipsch ProMedia 2.1, and returing each of them for various reasons, I bought these at bigmart just to give them a try. I was more than pleasantly surprised. The sound is very clear and crisp, the stereo separation is excellent, the bass is fine. One aspect I really like (that none of the others could provide) is very low volume sound that is equal volume through both speakers. On all of the others above, when the volume was turned very low, sound was produced from only one speaker. Not good. Of coures, if you're really into loud, bass-driven sound for movies or games, the others would be great, but not for very soft listening. Only two minor drawbacks to these from Philips. One, the cords are a bit short, and two, the main speaker is not protected by a grill of some sort. Otherwise, I highly recommend these for relatively inexpensive but high quality speakers. Again, just what I was looking for, and nicely priced.

Remembering that these are PC desktop speakers, not TV or stereo system speakers, the sound output (40 watts) is incredible, IF:
You use the equalizer in Windows Media Player, or equivalent, to adjust the tonal response;
You remember that there are always TWO; and sometimes THREE volume adjustments: the Windows main volume slider or keyboard volume control; the volume knob on the front of the speakers; the application's (You-Tube, Media Player, etc) slider;
You don't jack the volume up to the point of distortion (and ear damage).
I suspect that the few complaining of inadequate volume are overlooking one of the 'extra' volume adjustments, as these speakers play music easily heard around a long ell, into the kitchen, 25 feet from their location...or the Saint Saens Organ Symphony Finale THREE rooms away, clearly.
Again, desktop: the short cable between the speakers is not a problem...they go on a computer desk, not in a theater. Even with the relatively short distance between speakers, the stereo separation has been good when seated at or near the computer.
OTOH the speaker-to-PC cable should be longer. This was not a problem for me, as the relatively ancient Sound Blaster speakers I was replacing also have an equally short cable; that was already long solved with an inexpensive extension cable.
The lack of a cover over the drivers does make them seem vulnerable to accidental damage, and they may become a dust magnets.
I gave them 5 stars based on their performance in their price range ; without either a built in tone control or a sub woofer.
As my wife said, when I played one of her favorite CDs for her, "I can hear the bass again!" And if Mama's happy, then everybody's happy.
